چکیده

OEIS is a malformative complex that associates an omphalocele, an exstrophy of the cloaca, an anal imperforation and spinal defects. Normal development of the cloaca gives origin to the lower abdominal wall with bladder, intestine and anus, genitals organ and part of the pelvis bones and lumbosacral spine. Incidence of OEIS is rare, thought to occur in 1 in 200,000 to 1 in 250,000 live births. Clinical findings are numerous. Main findings are: failure of fusion of the genital tubercles and pubic rami, incomplete development of the lumbosacral vertebrae with spinal dysraphism, imperforate anus, cryptorchidism and epispadias in males and anomalies of the mullerian duct derivatives in females, and a wide range of urinary tract anomalies. Most patients have a single umbilical artery. Most cases are sporadic. The exact etiology remains unknown but teratogenic exposure (to diazepam, diphenylhydantoin), single defects in blastogenesis and early development of the mesoderm as well as mutations in Homeobox genes (HLXB9) have been suggested in playing a role in the pathogenesis of this disease. We relate the case of a newborn with no prenatal care, born at 35 weeks (no antenatal ultrasound performed). We thus emphasize the importance of screening ultrasound in order to diagnose this complex syndrome. Figure 1: A) 35 weeks old newborn with OEIS complex. Note the anal imperforation and spinal defects; B) 35 weeks old newborn with OEIS complex. Here we can appreciate an omphalocele and an exstrophy of the cloaca

Omphalocele, exstrophy of cloaca, imperforate anus and spinal defect (OEIS Complex): A case report

Omphalocele, exstrophy of cloaca, imperforate anus and spinal defect (OEIS Complex) is an extremely rare combination of serious defects, which was firstly described by Carey and colleagues. Surgical repair of cloacal exctrophy in patients with OEIS complex can be performed at one stage, but it can also be performed safely as staged to minimize the potential complications. In this case report, w...

The OEIS complex (omphalocele, exstrophy, imperforate anus, spinal defects).

The OEIS complex comprises a combination of defects including omphalocele, exstrophy of the cloaca, imperforate anus, and spinal defects. It may represent the most severe manifestation of a spectrum of birth defects, the exstrophy-epispadias sequence. The OEIS complex affects 1 in 200,000 to 400,000 pregnancies and is of unknown cause. The purpose of the current report is to document the occurr...

Comprehensive genetic analysis of OEIS complex reveals no evidence for a recurrent microdeletion or duplication.

Omphalocele-exstrophy of the bladder-imperforate anus-spinal defects (OEIS) complex, or cloacal exstrophy (EC), is a rare constellation of malformations in humans involving the urogenital, gastrointestinal, and skeletal systems, and less commonly the central nervous system. Although OEIS complex is well-recognized in the clinical setting, there remains a significant lack of understanding of thi...

Prenatal ascertainment of OEIS complex/cloacal exstrophy - 15 new cases and literature review.

Omphalocele-exstrophy of the bladder-imperforate anus-spinal defects (OEIS) complex or cloacal exstrophy (EC), describes a rare grouping of more commonly occurring component malformations [Carey et al., 1978]. The etiology is unknown, but likely heterogeneous. While postnatal identification of its associated gastrointestinal, spinal, and genitourinary systems delineates the extent and natural h...

Multimodality Renal Failure in a Patient with OEIS Complex

Omphalocele-exstrophy of the bladder-imperforate anus-spinal defect (OEIS) complex is a rare constellation of clinical abnormalities with wide phenotypic presentation. We describe a case of a preterm neonate with OEIS complex with acute renal failure, and the challenges in diagnosis and management of this patient as renal failure can be a multifactorial process when encountered with this rare c...
